A lawn is never overrun by chance. Every weed that takes hold reveals something about the soil, mowing or watering, and each one calls for an appropriate response. Knowing how to identify weeds before taking action completely changes the result: clover is not treated like plantain, and ground ivy requires a different approach from chickweed. The good news is that a selective lawn weed killer applied at the right time gets rid of the vast majority of them without harming the grass. How can you identify lawn weeds?

Three observation criteria are enough to classify almost all lawn species.

Leaf shape. This is the decisive criterion. Look at the venation: if the veins are parallel and run from one end of the leaf to the other, you are looking at a grass. If they form a branched network extending from a central vein, it is a broadleaf plant. All the plants we are going to look at, except for couch grass, belong to this second family.

The plant's growth habit. Three forms are common. The rosette pressed against the ground, like dandelion or plantain. The creeping habit with trailing stems, like clover and ground ivy. The upright habit, like thistle.

Flowering. The colour, shape and arrangement of the flowers resolve any remaining doubts. This is often when identification becomes obvious, even without a reference photo.

This distinction between grasses and broadleaf plants determines everything that follows. Your lawn is made up of grasses. A selective weed killer is designed to act on broadleaf plants while leaving grasses unharmed: that is exactly what allows it to clean up a lawn without leaving any traces.

Common lawn weeds, species by species

White clover

Identification: three rounded leaflets often marked with a lighter white crescent, creeping stems that root at the nodes, and white flowers grouped in small balls that are frequently visited by bees.

What it indicates: Clover is a legume capable of fixing nitrogen from the air. It therefore thrives where the lawn lacks nitrogen. A lawn overrun with clover is almost always under-fertilized.

Treatment: Selective weedkiller works well on this broadleaf weed. But if you do not correct the nitrogen deficiency, it will return. Treatment and fertilization go hand in hand.

Speedwell

Identification: Small, rounded leaves with toothed edges arranged along trailing stems that form a dense mat. Small flowers with four petals, a characteristic vivid blue, borne on slender stalks.

What it indicates: It prefers cool, fertile soils and takes advantage of areas where the grass has thinned out.

Treatment: Its low-growing habit allows it to pass beneath the mower blade, making hand-pulling tedious. It is one of the species specifically targeted by selective lawn formulations, which remain the most direct solution.

Ground ivy

Identification: This is the plant many people search for under the term "heart-shaped leaves." Its leaves are indeed heart-shaped, almost kidney-shaped, with scalloped edges, arranged in opposite pairs along the stem. Two clues confirm the identification: the stem is square to the touch, and crushed foliage gives off a strong aromatic scent. Purple flowers appear in small tubes in spring.

What it indicates: It readily colonizes cool, partially shaded areas, often along hedge edges or beneath trees.

Treatment: Its creeping stolons root at regular intervals, making it an effective colonizer. It is one of the main targets of selective lawn weedkillers, and treatment works best when applied while the foliage is well developed.

Common chickweed, also known as bird's chickweed

Identification: small, oval, pointed leaves arranged opposite each other on tender, brittle stems. The feature that confirms the species: a line of fine hairs running along just one side of the stem, switching sides at each node. Tiny white flowers with five petals so deeply divided that they appear to number ten.

What it indicates: rich, moist soil with plenty of nitrogen. It is a plant that thrives in fertile soil.

Treatment: Its life cycle is short and its roots are shallow, making it easy to remove by hand in small areas. On a larger surface, selective treatment is much faster.

Dandelion

Identification: a rosette of leaves deeply divided into pointed teeth, white latex when broken, a solitary yellow flower followed by a fluffy spherical seed head.

What it indicates: it takes advantage of compacted areas and gaps left by sparse grass.

Treatment: its taproot can reach considerable depth, making partial removal largely ineffective. A systemic product that reaches down to this root is the most direct solution. Daisy

Identification: a rosette of small, spatula-shaped leaves pressed flat against the ground, and the white flower with the yellow center that everyone knows.

What it indicates: two causes almost always combine: compacted soil and mowing too short, which weakens the lawn without hindering the daisy.

Treatment: it responds well to selective weed killer. Raising the mowing height is the complementary step that prevents its return.

Plantain

Identification: a rosette of broad or lance-shaped leaves, depending on the species, with very prominent parallel veins extending from the base, and an upright flower spike on a leafless stem.

What it indicates: it is the ultimate indicator of compacted soil. It is found primarily along frequently used paths, at the edges of walkways, and in play areas.

Treatment: selective treatment works, and mechanically aerating the soil removes the cause.

Canada thistle

Identification: elongated, deeply lobed leaves edged with sharp spines, upright growth, mauve flower heads.

What it indicates: it is a perennial plant with spreading roots, capable of reappearing some distance from the original plant.

Treatment: a systemic product that reaches the root network is necessary. Plan to treat any regrowth: this type of perennial is managed over time rather than with a single application.

Field bindweed

Identification: arrow-shaped leaves, twining stems that wrap around everything they encounter, white or pink funnel-shaped flowers.

What it reveals: in a lawn, it generally comes from an edge, a nearby flower bed, or an adjacent embankment.

Treatment: its roots extend deep into the soil, which again calls for systemic action and some persistence. Treating the original patch along the edge also prevents recolonization.

Couch grass: a special case

Identification: strap-like leaves with parallel veins, making it a grass, with two small auricles enclosing the stem at the base of the leaf, and white, pointed rhizomes beneath the surface.

How do you treat lawn weeds?

Three approaches complement one another, each in its own setting.

Manual removal remains highly useful for isolated patches and clearly visible rosettes. Use a weeding knife to follow the taproots of dandelions and plantains, and work on well-drained soil, the day after rain. On a widely colonized lawn, the operation becomes time-consuming and leaves holes that need reseeding.

Selective treatment is the go-to solution as soon as the infestation exceeds a few clumps. The principle is simple: the product acts on broadleaf weeds while sparing the grasses in your lawn. It travels through the sap of the targeted plant, from the foliage to the roots, which explains its effectiveness on deep-rooted perennials.

Application conditions determine the result just as much as the product:

Apply to a dry lawn, approximately five days after mowing, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, so that the weeds have sufficient leaf surface.

Choose a period with no rain or frost forecast in the following hours.

Follow the indicated concentration without exceeding it. For the COMPO concentrate, for example, the manufacturer recommends 50 ml in 5 litres of water for 50 m² when spraying, or 10 ml in 10 litres for 10 m² when applying with a watering can.

Practical example. A lawn has clover on the sunny half, ground ivy along the hedge, and three isolated dandelions in the middle. The correct sequence is to remove the three dandelions with a weeding knife in a few minutes, then treat the two infested areas with a selective herbicide, and finally apply a nitrogen fertilizer to the area that had clover. When should you weed your lawn? Choosing the right time

The timing matters just as much as the product, because treatment follows the plant's physiology.

Late spring is the reference period. Weeds are growing vigorously, their foliage is well developed, sap is actively circulating, and it quickly carries the product to the roots. This is when treatment is fastest and most complete.

Early autumn is the second treatment window. Perennial plants then transfer their reserves to their underground organs, and the product moves down with them. This is particularly effective on deep-rooted species such as dandelion and thistle.

Midsummer requires extra precautions. On a lawn stressed by drought, it is better to wait for watering or rain, let the vegetation start growing again for a few days, then treat when the foliage is fully green.

During cold weather, vegetation slows down. Wait for growth to resume before intervening under suitable conditions.

How do you restore a weed-infested lawn?

When the recovery concerns the entire area, proceed in this order.

Diagnose the problem first. Identify the dominant species and what they indicate. A carpet of plantain and daisies indicates compacted soil, while a clover invasion indicates a nitrogen deficiency. Treatment alone does not address the cause.

Remove large clumps by hand before treatment, only if they are clearly defined rosettes that you can reseed afterward.

Treat the area with a selective herbicide, under the conditions described above.

Wait until it has dried out completely, then use a scarifier to remove the debris and accumulated thatch.

Aerate the soil in compacted areas, using a digging fork or a hollow-tine aerator.

Reseed bare areas with seed suited to the exposure, lightly raking the surface before sowing to ensure good soil contact.

Apply fertilizer suited to the season, then water regularly until the seedlings emerge.

How can you prevent weeds from returning?

Prevention rests on a single principle: dense turf leaves no room for weeds. Four maintenance steps are all it takes.

Mow high. This is the most effective and most neglected measure. A generous cutting height shades the soil, slows weed seed germination, and encourages the lawn to develop deep roots.

Fertilize regularly, with an application at the end of the season to prepare the lawn for winter and vigorous regrowth.

Aerate areas exposed to foot traffic every year. Decompaction removes the competitive advantage of plantain and daisies.

Overseed thin areas as soon as they appear. Bare ground is an invitation, and recolonization always starts there.

Practical example. A homeowner treats their lawn every spring and notices the same infestation the following year. Simply raising the mowing height and adding autumn fertilization results in denser turf that naturally smothers new weed growth. Treatment then becomes an occasional intervention on a few patches, rather than repeated blanket applications.
